Community Activities

Lidgate is a lively community with many activities taking place at various times of the Year.

VILLAGE HALL
Lidgate Village Hall is owned by everyone in the village and is managed by a group of trustees elected by people in the village - predictably called the Village Hall Management Committee. A number of activities take place in the Village Hall at various times of the year and it is available for hire for private functions by people both in and outside Lidgate. Some of the activities are listed below:

  • Night Class - run by tutors from Cambridge University and covering such diverse subjects as Philosophy, Modern Art, Medieval Houses and many more. Classes are open to everyone, many people travelling miles from outlying villages to attend.
  • Quiz Nights - irregular events hosted by local people and featuring a range of questions suitable for all ages and intellects. The evenings are usually accompanied by a Fish and Chip supper.
  • Film Nights - occasional events featuring recent or classic films in a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Fete - usually twice a year, summer and Christmas, the latter jointly in aid of the village hall and St Mary’s Church.
  • Summer Barbecue - often with Live Music, that takes place in the garden.
  • Children’s Parties - a favourite venue for local children, with plenty of space outdoors and in for fun and games.

The hall is currently undergoing major restoration work to improve this valuable amenity. Grateful thanks are given to everyone in the village who has contributed their time and energy towards improving this valuable community asset.

LIDGATE CRICKET CLUB
The Lidgate Cricket Club provides opportunities for young and old to join an enjoyable sporting activity. LCC was formed in 1978 by residents David Grant, John Mitson and George Poole. For 28 ears, the club has played its home matches on Ousden Playing Filed, using Ousden Village Hall as its pavilion.

In 2006, the club played 9 fixtures. All matches are ‘friendlies’ played against other local teams and ‘Invitation IXs’ on Sunday (occasionally Saturday) afternoons during summer. LCC is currently run by Angus MacDonald and John Whitefield. An ability to play cricket is not a prerequisite, though a sense of humour is an advantage.

Anyone interested in taking part should contact Angus (01638 500260) or John (01638 500102).
